Sons speak as man charged with murdering Hastings jeweller Dermot O'Toole

The devastated sons of a jeweller who was allegedly murdered in his shop have paid tribute to their "courageous" father. 

Dermot O'Toole, 64, died when he came to the aid of his wife Bridget when their jewellery shop was targeted by an alleged robber on Friday evening.

Mr O'Toole died at the scene and his 63- year-old wife was taken to Frankston hospital.
She was released on Saturday night.
A man has since been charged with murder and has appeared before an out-of-sessions court.

The couple's sons Christian, Dale and Trent said their father and mother were inseparable as they spoke outside the family business in Hastings on Sunday.Christian said: "He was devoted to her.
"Nothing demonstrates this devotion more than the way in which he was so tragically taken from us."
Fighting back tears the men spoke of a man who lived for his family.

"Nothing made Dad happier than his family," Christian said.
"He always knew what we needed, whether it was a hug or a laugh.
"He took pride in any of our achievements, no matter how small."
Dermot and Bridget O'Toole were married 41 years ago.

They met in Ireland before moving to Australia, where Bridget gave birth to her three boys.
The had run the Jewell Shed in Hastings for 26 years.
Christian O'Toole said their dad was looking forward to becoming a grandfather for the fourth time in the near future, with Dale's wife expecting the couple's first child.
He said: "His three grandchildren provided him with much joy.
"He was delighted at the news that a fourth grandchild is on the way, attending a number of ultrasounds through which he laughed.
"We know Dad will be with the family when the baby is born."
The family thanked the local community for their support.
Christian added: "We have been overwhelmed (by support)."
